The WSFU value of each fixture accounts for both its flow rate and how often it is likely to run simultaneously.

Practical Tips

  • Always pick the right use column. A 6-unit apartment building uses the public column for shared laundry rooms but the private column for in-unit fixtures — split the takeoff accordingly.
  • Low-flow fixtures have lower WSFU. A 1.28 gpf WaterSense toilet is 2.2 WSFU vs 2.5 for a 1.6 gpf toilet. Modern low-flow fixtures can reduce building service size by one trade size.
  • Hose bibbs add up. Outdoor hose bibbs are 2.5 WSFU each and are easy to forget — four forgotten bibbs is 10 extra WSFU on the service calculation.
