Squares, Bundles, and Coverage
Roofing is sold by the square — 100 square feet of finished roof coverage. Asphalt 3-tab shingles ship 3 bundles per square (each bundle covers 33.3 sq ft). Architectural / laminated shingles are thicker but most lines still ship 3 bundles per square. Heavyweight designer shingles can run 4 bundles per square. Always check the bundle stamp for the exact coverage — it varies by manufacturer and product line.
The Waste Factor
Effective area = Roof area × (1 + waste% / 100)
Squares = Effective area / 100
Bundles = Squares × bundles-per-square (rounded up)
- Gable roofs: 10% waste (simple cuts at rake and ridge)
- Hip roofs: 12–15% waste (hips add diagonal cuts)
- Valleys / dormers / turrets: 15–25% waste
Waste covers cuts, starter-strip material, damaged bundles, and the ridge cap if you cut your own. Ordering short stops the job mid-roof and wastes a half-day — the rule is to round up and return unopened bundles.
IRC R905.2.4 Fastening
IRC R905.2.4 requires 4 nails per 3-tab shingle in normal conditions and 6 nails in high-wind zones (≥ 110 mph Ultimate Design Wind Speed) or on slopes over 21:12. Standard placement is 12 5/8" from the bottom edge, one over each tab cutout. One square of 3-tab (≈ 78 shingles) needs ~312 nails; the calculator uses 320 nails per square to cover starter and ridge cuts.
Worked Example
Scenario: A simple gable roof measures 1,500 sq ft of sloped area, using 3-tab shingles with a 10% waste factor. The ridge runs 60 lf and the eaves+rakes total 130 lf. Estimate all material.
- Effective area = 1,500 × 1.10 = 1,650 sq ft
- Squares = 1,650 / 100 = 16.5 squares
- Bundles = 16.5 × 3 = 49.5 → round up to 50 bundles
- Nails = 16.5 × 320 = 5,280 nails → /120 per coil = 44 coils
- Ridge cap (cut from 3-tab @ 20 lf/bundle) = 60 / 20 = 3 bundles
- Starter strip (cut from 3-tab @ 33 lf/bundle) = 130 / 33 = 4 bundles
Total order: 50 + 3 ridge + 4 starter = 57 bundles plus 44 nail coils. Starter and ridge can be bought as pre-cut accessories (GAF Pro-Start, Owens Corning DekTec) to save labor — order by linear foot instead.
Practical Tips
- Always round bundles UP. 49.5 bundles → order 50. A half-bundle short costs a half-day trip to the supply house; an extra bundle is returnable unopened.
- Match the lot number. Shingle color varies between production runs. Buy every bundle from the same lot and mix 5–6 bundles as you go up the roof to hide any color drift.
- High-wind zones need 6 nails. IRC R905.2.4 mandates 6 nails (or a special high-wind shingle) at Ultimate Design Wind Speed ≥ 110 mph — most coastal and Tornado Alley jurisdictions. Six nails add ~50% to the nail count.
- Starter strip is mandatory. IRC R905.2.5 requires a starter strip at the eaves (and manufacturer specs require it at rakes). Cut your own from 3-tab or buy a pre-cut adhesive starter — both work.
