What Drainage Fixture Units (DFU) Measure

A Drainage Fixture Unit (DFU) is the load a plumbing fixture places on a drainage (sanitary) system, normalized so 1 DFU equals roughly 7.5 gallons per minute of discharge. DFU values are tabulated in IPC Table 709.1 and UPC Table 709.1 for every fixture type: a lavatory is 1 DFU, a toilet (1.6 gpf) is 4 DFU, a 1.28 gpf toilet is 3 DFU, a kitchen sink is 2 DFU, a bathtub is 2 DFU. Summing all fixtures gives the total DFU load that drives pipe sizing.

The IPC Table 710.1 Lookup

IPC Table 710.1 and UPC Table 710.1 list the maximum DFU load a horizontal drainage pipe can carry at a given slope, flowing half-full. The table has three slope columns (1/8, 1/4, 1/2 in/ft) and rows for each pipe size from 1.5" to 15". To size: find the slope column, then scan down for the smallest pipe whose DFU capacity ≥ your total DFU.

Sample capacities at 1/4 in/ft: 1.5" = 3 DFU, 2" = 21 DFU, 3" = 24 DFU, 4" = 216 DFU, 6" = 1,750 DFU.

Slope Rules — IPC 714.1 / 714.2

Code enforces minimum slopes to maintain self-scouring velocity (≥ 2 ft/s): pipes 2" and smaller require 1/4 in/ft minimum (IPC 714.1), and pipes 3" and larger may run at 1/8 in/ft (IPC 714.2). The 1/8 in/ft column in Table 710.1 therefore omits 1.5" and 2" pipe — they are not permitted at that flat slope.

Worked Example

Scenario: A residential bathroom group (toilet 1.28 gpf = 3 DFU, lavatory = 1 DFU, bathtub = 2 DFU, shower = 2 DFU) plus a kitchen sink (2 DFU) and clothes washer (3 DFU) on a single branch — total 13 DFU. Wait, add another bathroom group (3+1+2+2 = 8 DFU). Total = 24 DFU. The branch runs at 1/4 in/ft slope. Size the pipe.

  1. Total DFU = 13 + 8 = 24 DFU (IPC Table 709.1 fixture values)
  2. Slope = 1/4 in/ft (0.25 in/ft)
  3. Read IPC Table 710.1, column "1/4 in/ft": 2" = 21 (too small), 3" = 24 (exactly fits)
  4. Minimum pipe size = 3 in nominal

At exactly the capacity limit (24 DFU / 24 cap) there is 0% spare. Good practice is to upsize to 4" (216 DFU capacity) if any future fixtures are anticipated, since a 3" line at 24 DFU leaves no margin.

Practical Tips

  • Count DFU before you pick pipe. A two-bathroom house (2 × 6 DFU per bathroom group + kitchen + laundry) lands at roughly 20–24 DFU, which is the exact boundary between 2" and 3" pipe at 1/4 in/ft. Miscounting one fixture can mean the wrong size.
  • 1/8 in/ft only for 3"+. IPC 714.2 forbids 1/8 in/ft slope on 1.5" and 2" pipe — they clog. If your field condition forces a flat 2" run, you must regrade or upsize to 3".
  • Toilets dominate the DFU count. A 1.6 gpf toilet is 4 DFU vs 3 DFU for a 1.28 gpf WaterSense model. Switching to high-efficiency fixtures can drop a building below a pipe-size threshold.
  • Branch vs building drain. Each branch is sized for its own DFU; the building drain (main sewer line out) carries the sum of all branches. The main almost always needs to be 4" because the 3" cap (24–31 DFU) is quickly exceeded once two bathroom groups and a kitchen are added.
  • Building sewer (outside the foundation) follows the same table but IPC 714.2.2 allows 1/16 in/ft for 6" and larger with special approval — otherwise stick to 1/8 in/ft minimum.

How do I calculate total DFU load for a building?
Look up each fixture in IPC Table 709.1 / UPC Table 709.1, multiply by the fixture count, and sum. A bathroom group (toilet 1.6 gpf + lavatory + bathtub) is about 6 DFU; a 1.28 gpf WaterSense toilet drops the toilet to 3 DFU. A typical two-bathroom single-family home totals 18–24 DFU, which is the threshold between 2" and 3" main drain at 1/4 in/ft slope.
Can I use a 1/8 in/ft slope on a 2-inch drain?
No. IPC 714.1 requires a minimum 1/4 in/ft slope for pipes 2 inches and smaller, and IPC 714.2 allows 1/8 in/ft only for pipes 3 inches and larger. A 2" pipe at 1/8 in/ft would flow too slowly (below 2 ft/s scouring velocity) and clog. If a field condition forces a flatter 2" run, you must upsize to 3" to use the 1/8 in/ft column.
What is the difference between IPC Table 710.1(1), (2), and (3)?
IPC publishes three sub-tables: 710.1(1) for 1/8 in/ft slope, 710.1(2) for 1/4 in/ft slope, and 710.1(3) for 1/2 in/ft slope. Each lists maximum DFU capacity per pipe size at that slope. Why does my 3" drain back up even though the DFU count fits?
The table assumes ideal half-full gravity flow with clean, smooth pipe. Real-world causes of backup include: buildup reducing the effective ID (especially old cast iron with tuberculation), a slope steeper than 2 in/ft which causes solids to separate from liquids, a partially blocked vent reducing flow, or a fixture discharge rate higher than the 7.5 gpm/DFU assumption. A camera inspection is the first diagnostic step.
